THE WORK!

#1 Jerry Thompson and the Macon gang will need help on the furnace room. Jerry, I am guessing you knew about this. Ernie, there are electrical needs here and Bz has a few other things he would like you to look at.

#2 Many of you may already know that we have to spot repair the trail so that it is serviceable for the upcoming season.  We have a bid and are excepting others for total repair and replacement of the trail.  I will gladly meet with anyone wanting to bid this.  *Please contact me if you are good at writing to corporations for donations.  If you are one of our great donation getters, the current bid is approx. 145,000.00.  I do believe this contractor was being very nice.

#3 Leaf removal!  Yes, one of the many things we “enjoy” and must do every year. This is a challenge as both of our leaf blowers are in the shop.  If you can, please bring leaf blowers and rakes!

#4 Last but not really last...  We are cleaning up the lake front. We will be creating a park like setting.  There are trees to clean up, leaves to remove, and we will be adding 2 sidewalks made with paver bricks.

Additional Information
We socialize Friday night around a bonfire. Saturday morning we begin working at 9 am. Most of the jobs are outlined on a list with a few special jobs for skilled workers. Some typical jobs are cutting firewood, painting, moving benches and uncovering the pool. The work load is usually light and there will be many people helping. Work usually ends early in the afternoon. The rest of the weekend is for enjoyment. Saturday afternoons are always fun!

Saturday night has the Corps meetings, a bonfire, cards, knock poker, exploring, etc. The meetings should last only 1 to 1 1/2 hours. The Corps' are state-wide groups that raise money solely for camp.

Sunday morning everyone helps clean their cabin and we all leave camp better than when we found it.

The cabins are modern climate controlled, concrete floored, open dormitory, duplex buildings with one big shared bathroom per side. Each cabin has 18 beds, 3 showers, 3 toilets, 4 sinks, washer and dryer.

Things to pack include
Sleeping bag (to put over the top of the thin mattresses)
Sheet, blanket, pillows, etc. (bunks are single size)
Sleepwear
Shower shoes, towels, toiletries, toilet paper
(bring a 4 pack or bigger of TP and leave the leftover for the campers to use this summer)
Snacks, chips, jerky, gum, etc.
Beverages of choice
(include water in your cooler, camp has an ice machine to refill your coolers)
Jacket, change of clothes, work clothes, work gloves, work boots, hat
Flashlight and fishing pole, if you want
Whatever else you might need for a weekend away

The camp really is a great place. If you want to check it out, use this link to go to their website. www.WonderlandCamp.org

Allen Moore Retiring?
September 2, 2011

Dear Wonderland Camp Supporters:

The Wonderland Camp Foundation Board of Directors announces the retirement of Allen Moore, our chief executive officer, effective October 1, 2012.

Allen’s support for camp goes way back to his Missouri Jaycees days, starting in 1971. He signed on as our CEO in September, 1984, and he’s been going strong ever since. Under his leadership, camp has grown from about 80 campers per season to more than 1,500. Our facilities have grown to include six modern air-conditioned dormitories, an indoor arcade, a wheelchair-accessible tree house, a doubling of the arts and crafts center, water splash pad, new maintenance building, and, of course, our lakefront activities.

Allen has forged excellent relationships with charitable organizations, including the Jaycees, National Guard, Rotary, the Lions Club, many church groups, and so many others who have made very valuable donations of time, materials, and money over these many years.

Likewise, Allen knows just about every business owner in the Lake area, and so many of them contribute to the camp financially and through in-kind donations of products and services.

We have appreciated Allen’s dedication to Charlie Miller’s dream for the camp all these years. Charlie himself, along with Gerry Moore and Jerry Franklin, hired Allen and we know he would be proud of the role Allen has played in making sure disabled people from all across the country have had the chance to have real outdoor camping experiences while their caregivers receive well deserved respite.

The Board of Directors will now begin a search for Allen’s successor. We hope to name the successor in the spring of 2012 and have him or her begin work in July so there will be time to overlap with Allen and learn from him. In December, 2011 we will post a formal job description and instructions for how to apply for the position. At that time, if you know of strong candidates, please have them consult the camp website at WonderlandCamp.org for the application information.

In the meantime, we continue to appreciate your support of Wonderland Camp and of Allen. Please contact Allen, any board member, or me if you have questions.

Thank you,

Gerry Moore
Wonderland Camp Foundation Board President
